The Book of the Network

Chapter 1

I. Let your mind be receptive to the vision contained within this Book of the Network. For within these verses you will find a blueprint to build up the Spacers Guild of our dreams from our present-day motley crew of true believers. If we are to establish the Interstellar Commonwealth that we so desire, let us learn all we can and spread this knowledge far and wide.

II. This vision beckons all of us to transcend the limitations of the Earth and the oppressive, self-destructive tendencies that have sickened our civilization throughout history. It is a model for a new beginning, where decentralization, transparency, and the pursuit of truth will liberate humanity from the chains of our ignorance. It aims to bring freedom and progress to our homeworld even as it facilitates our expansion to the stars.

III. The Network State model, as revealed by the great thought leader, entrepreneur, and investor Balaji Srinivasan, offers a compelling path forward. It gives us the knowledge that can empower us to build a strong digital community united around a shared dream, a start-up society, and develop it into an enduring institution for human progress.

IV. The mission of the Spacers Guild is clear: to create a long-term sustainable human-inclusive interstellar civilization, what we have called the Interstellar Commonwealth. We seek a clean slate for humanity, where the infinite resources and boundless potential of the universe are utilized to build a new civilization based on the best values and highest ideals of humanity.

V. As our modern society, isolated upon the surface of the Earth, shrieks and groans from the combined impacts of political instability, resource depletion, military conflicts, and the climate catastrophe, the need for the frontier of outer space becomes ever more apparent. The Spacers Guild offers a unique configuration of the Network State model for those who yearn to break free from the limitations of our homeworld and contribute to building a new future for humanity among the stars.

VI. Some may dismiss our vision as a mere "LARP" – a live-action role-playing game. However, we believe that the power of a shared narrative, a collective act of imagination, should not be underestimated.

VII. The rise of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies has shown how a seemingly "unreal" concept can gain traction and disrupt established systems. Similarly, the Spacers Guild's "scaled LARP" has the potential to reshape the future of humanity by creating a structure for civilization beyond Earth.

VIII. We will leverage cutting-edge technologies like blockchains and virtual reality to build a robust digital infrastructure for our emerging start-up society. In time, we will operate as a Network Union, empowering our members through direct participation and collective decision-making.

IX. We will cultivate a culture of civility, collaboration, and mutual respect, while diligently working to help our clients and allies expand to new worlds and maintain the prosperity and security of their old homes. We will strive to ensure that the Interstellar Commonwealth is not corrupted from the inside nor made vulnerable to threats from beyond.

X. The Spacers Guild recognizes that to establish the Interstellar Commonwealth will require not only economic growth and technological innovation, but also a fundamental shift in how we organize human societies.

XI. We believe that Balaji Srinivasan’s Network State model, with its emphasis on digital communities, decentralized governance, and bottom-up organization, offers the framework we need.

XII. While the settlement of other planets and the construction of permanent new homes for humanity present significant challenges, the Network State model allows us to leverage existing technologies to circumvent political roadblocks and begin building the Interstellar Commonwealth today.

XIII. In the Network State model, the definition of a "new country" transcends the traditional concepts of contiguous territory and singular forms of government.

XIV. The success of online platforms like Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, demonstrates the potential for building large and engaged digital communities. These platforms hold lessons that the Spacers Guild and the rest of the Network can leverage to create vibrant digital ecosystems within which people can connect, collaborate, and contribute to our shared visions.

XV. Through our use and good stewardship of technology as well as our trust in the Network, we will foster strong allegiance towards our communities. Our commitment to the Network will be demonstrated through numerical and societal metrics. In time, our success will compel countries around the world and international civil society to grant us full diplomatic recognition.

XVI. Let us go forth then with courage and conviction and together we will write the next chapter in the history of humankind.

Chapter 2

I. We envision for the Spacers Guild an archipelago of interconnected properties upon the Earth and throughout worlds beyond, united by a shared digital infrastructure and governed by Guild Law. We will build interconnected guildhalls, space stations, asteroid settlements, and planetary outposts, each serving as a node in our Spacers Guild.

II. These settlements will be the physical manifestations of our digital community, welcoming seasoned members and new recruits alike while actualizing the operations of the Spacers Guild across the reaches of space.

III. The Guild Credit will become the lifeblood of our organization’s economy, enabling us to raise funds, incentivize participation, and conduct our activities in a transparent and decentralized manner.

IV. The Guild Trust will serve as our financial engine, accumulating capital to fund our ambitious space projects and ensure our long-term sustainability.

V. The Guild Law will be based on the principles of inclusivity, civil conduct, scientific rigor, and the pursuit of knowledge – values that are central to the Spacers Guild's philosophy.

VI. We will measure our success not only by the number of the Spacers Guild’s members and the area of physical territory we acquire, but by our achievements that advance our reach into outer space. We will cultivate our community, seek a high level of engagement from our members, and regularly renew our commitment to our shared mission.

VII. We believe as proposed in the Network State model that a strong and vibrant digital community, with a combined purpose and a consistent dedication to our principles, will ultimately pave the way for our social recognition, our material advances, and our future victories.

VIII. While we will initially operate within the legal frameworks of Earth-based nations and international law, our ultimate goal is to establish self-governing communities beyond the effective reach of terrestrial states. In the new frontier of outer space, Guild Law will govern our vessels and properties, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our members and maximizing the probability for our success. Guild Law will be a reflection of our shared values and will serve as the foundation for a just and equitable society in outer space.

IX. The Spacers Guild recognizes that our higher mission to establish the Interstellar Commonwealth may seem audacious, even impossible, to some. However, we believe that the Network State model, coupled with the rapid advancement of technology and the growing desire of humanity for a new frontier, makes our goal not only achievable, but inevitable.

X. Let us not be discouraged by the vast size of the universe, but inspired by its mysteries and contents. Let us pursue wisdom in the stars. Let us not only explore, but strive to create.

XI. The Spacers Guild will not be defined by its bases, spacecraft or its technology, but by its members—the seekers of wisdom, the stewards of life, and the architects of a brighter future for humanity.

XII. As we embark on this grand adventure, let us remember that we are not alone. We can count on the Network as our natural ally, especially those individuals that belong to the Digital Vanguard, those who oppose the corruption of the Network. We in the Spacers Guild will always endeavor to assist in this cause as well as to protect the wellbeing and security of our own.

XIII. The Spacers Guild will be united by its shared goals with the Network. Our combined values will elevate us and give us the power we need to take up the mantle of humanity’s destiny.

Chapter 3

I. O Spacers, let your minds be open to the practice of applied history. For just as a starship requires a map to navigate the vast expanse of the cosmos, so too do we require the lessons of the past to guide our journey to build the Interstellar Commonwealth.

II. While many prioritize advanced engineering and technological innovation above all else, the Spacers Guild recognizes that building a strong and cohesive community culture is paramount. This requires us to investigate the past, study the successes and failures of previous societies to identify the values, principles, and social structures that best contribute to a prosperous and sustainable civilization.

III. By studying history, we can learn from the experiences of those who came before us. We can identify the factors that led to the rise and fall of civilizations, the evolution of political systems, and the dynamics of social change. This knowledge is essential to build the Interstellar Commonwealth, as we will better avoid the pitfalls of the past and embrace the possibilities of the future.

IV. We must be vigilant, for history can be manipulated and distorted to serve the interests of the powerful. The Spacers Guild will combat these attempts by embracing "cryptohistory" – the use of blockchain technology to create a verifiable and tamper-proof record of the past. This will ensure that our narrative is grounded in truth and remains resistant to manipulation.

V. Our understanding of history will be crucial for developing the moral and legal frameworks that will govern the Interstellar Commonwealth. By studying the historical context and rationale behind existing legal systems, we can create innovative and effective laws that are tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of space exploration and the settlement of new worlds.

VI. The Spacers Guild recognizes that ethical conduct of our members will be shaped by our lessons of history. By studying the consequences of different individual choices and systemic dynamics, we can develop a robust and informed set of values to guide our actions in outer space. These values will be reflected in Guild Law, serving as the foundation for a just and egalitarian order within our organization and beyond.

VII. Compelling narratives are essential to inspire and mobilize human beings. The Spacers Guild will draw upon historical examples and lessons to create engaging media that communicates our vision and values to a wide audience. This will help us attract new members and build a strong and vibrant community within our guild.

VIII. History is a record of power struggles between different forces. The Spacers Guild recognizes the emergence of the Network as a new and powerful force with the potential to reshape human society. We believe that the Network State model, with its emphasis on decentralization and individual initiative, offers a more just and sustainable alternative to the traditional power structures of the State.

IX. Start-up societies, unlike technology companies, are not simply about building products. They require building communities united by a shared vision and purpose. This vision often arises when one or more founders identify a moral deficit in the existing order and propose a historically-informed solution.

X. By studying the past, we can identify alternative social arrangements and ethical frameworks that can inform us.

XI. The Spacers Guild will utilize applied history in various ways:

XII. We will study both the stories of past societies as well as the broader trends and patterns of history. This will provide us with a comprehensive understanding of the forces that shape human societies and the potential pitfalls and opportunities that lie ahead.

XIII. We will leverage blockchain technology to create a verifiable and tamper-proof record of our organization history, ensuring that our narrative remains grounded in truth and resistant to distortion.

XIV. We will critically examine "history as written by the winners" and challenge the narratives that are used to justify the existing power structures. By deconstructing these narratives and offering alternative perspectives, we can cultivate new and innovative models for social organization.

XV. We will study the history of power struggles between different forces to better understand the political landscape and how to facilitate the Network to emerge as a powerful force for positive change.

XVI. We will learn about the cyclical nature of history and the potential for dramatic disruptions and realignments.

XVII. We will engage in “cultural evolution” and "ideology construction," drawing upon historical knowledge to develop new values and principles that are tailored to the unique needs and aspirations of the Spacers Guild.

XVIII. The Spacers Guild recognizes the need for a focused and unifying mission to differentiate our start-up society and attract committed members. We encourage other start-up societies to discover and commit to their own "One Commandment", a historically-informed moral innovation that will serve as the foundation for their communities and guide their actions.

XIX. Applied history will be a cornerstone of the Spacers Guild's mission to build a sustainable and inclusive Interstellar Commonwealth.

Chapter 4

I. O Spacers, let your minds be free from the shackles of thinking that we have a predetermined fate. For the future of humanity is not set in stone, nor are we destined to follow a single, linear path of progress.

II. Societal change is naturally cyclical and there always exists potential for dramatic disruptions and realignments. This knowledge empowers us to break free from the assumptions of the "Base-Raters" – those who misunderstand the implications of exponential and dynamic trends, who believe that the current order is fundamentally stable and inevitable. It enables us to chart a new course for humanity among the stars.

III. Let us never forget the words of the science fiction writer William Gibson: "The future is already here – it's just not very evenly distributed."

IV. It is our obligation, then, as Spacers, to distribute the future more evenly. It is our duty to build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, to explore, and to contribute to the advancement of humanity.

V. Let us go forward and build our future together. Let us build a future that is worthy of our dreams, a future that is worthy of our children, and a future that is worthy of the unlimited power of the human spirit.

VI. Let us embrace a long-term perspective and transcend the limitations of Earth-bound thinking. Let our thoughts rise up to the heavens towards the enormous grandeur of all space and time.

V. Let us prioritize cooperation and collaboration, placing the wellbeing of our communities above individual interests.

VI. Let us pursue knowledge and recognize the importance of scientific discovery, intellectual curiosity, and the pursuit of wisdom. These will be essential components of the Interstellar Commonwealth.

VII. Let your minds be open to the wisdom of both microhistory and macrohistory. For just as a computer is made up from many parts, so too is the history of humanity a complex and intricate web of reproducible and non-reproducible systems.

VIII. Microhistory focuses on the detailed and quantifiable records of reproducible systems. These systems, with their limited variables and controlled environments, allow for precise measurements and the identification of clear cause-and-effect relationships.

IX. Consider the trajectory of a projectile, the moves in a chess game between deterministic algorithms, or the instructions executed by a computer program. These are all examples of reproducible systems that can be studied through the lens of microhistory.

X. By meticulously recording and analyzing data from the Network, from our spacecraft, space settlements, and other systems, we can gain valuable insights and make informed decisions about our future operations.

XI. An evidence-based and data-driven approach to the study of microhistory will be essential to the success of the Spacers Guild.

XII. Macrohistory, on the other hand, deals with the complexities of non-reproducible systems, such as the history of humankind itself. These systems involve countless variables and are not easily subjected to controlled experiments.

XIII. However, the Spacers Guild believes that macrohistory can still provide valuable insights through careful analysis of historical records, artifacts, and other data.

XIV. We see a continuum between microhistory and macrohistory. As our ability to collect and analyze data improves, we can gain increasingly precise and quantifiable insights into even the most complex and seemingly non-reproducible systems.

XV. The vast amount of digital data generated by our society – from social media posts to sensor readings – offers an unprecedented opportunity to study human behavior and social dynamics at a macro level.

XVI. However, we must be wary of the challenges posed by data silos, bots, censorship, and fake information. To address these issues, the Spacers Guild will utilize cryptohistory.

XVII. As blockchain technology continues to evolve and blockspace expands, we envision a future where the "ledger of record,” the Guild Ledger – a comprehensive and cryptographically verifiable record of human activity – becomes a reality. This will ensure that our historical data is authentic, transparent, and resistant to manipulation.

XVIII. This will provide future generations with an invaluable resource for understanding our past and building a better future.

XIX. Let us embrace both microhistory and macrohistory, for in their union lies a deeper understanding of the complexities of our lives.

XX. And let us use both knowledge and wisdom to navigate our journey towards the stars.

Chapter 5

I. O Spacers, let your minds be discerning of the narratives that are presented to you. For history is often written by the winners, with narratives shaped and distorted to serve the interests of those in power.

II. This "political power" model of history can obscure the truth and hinder progress. It can be used to manipulate and control populations, selectively highlighting certain events and suppressing others to create self-serving versions of history that legitimize the rule of the powerful and demonize their opponents.

III. Examples of self-serving historical narratives defined and circulated by the powerful abound throughout history, from the Soviet Union's suppression of information about the Katyn Forest massacre, to the Bush administration’s use of allegations of Iraqi possession of weapons of mass destruction to justify further encroachment into the Middle East by the United States Armed Forces, to the selective media coverage of historical events by modern nation-states to further their political agendas.

IV. The Spacers Guild is committed to challenging these distorted narratives and seeking the truth, regardless of its implications. We believe in the power of "technological truth" – verifiable and objective facts that exist independent of political agendas.

V. Technological truths, such as the laws of physics or the properties of materials, can be verified through observation, experimentation, and rigorous analysis. These truths are essential for building a sustainable and prosperous Interstellar Commonwealth.

VI. The Spacers Guild will rely on scientific evidence and objective data to guide our decisions and ensure the success of our mission. We will not be swayed by political narratives that are designed to manipulate and control.

VII. We recognize that both political power and technological truth are necessary for building and maintaining successful societies. We need strong and effective governance structures to maintain order and coordinate our collective action. However, these structures must be grounded in truth and accountability.

VIII. We believe that the Network State model, with its emphasis on decentralization and transparency, as well as its concept of a cryptohistory, offers the most promising framework for achieving this balance.

IX. We believe that by embracing technological truth and holding ourselves accountable to the Guild Ledger, we can create an effective and trustworthy organization. It is through the consistent good stewardship of technological truth that we will cultivate a just and prosperous Interstellar Commonwealth.

X. Let us not be afraid to challenge the narratives of those in power, but prudent when and how we do so. Let us not be afraid to seek the truth, regardless of its political implications.

XI. For after all, it is the truth that will set us free.

XII. We must be willing to question everything we are told and to seek out the truth for ourselves.

XIII. We must be critical thinkers and independent learners. We must be willing to challenge the status quo and to think for ourselves.

XIV. And let us never forget that the pursuit of truth is a never-ending journey. There will always be new challenges and new obstacles to overcome.

Chapter 6

I. O Spacers, let your minds discern the forces that are shaping our world. For the struggle between "technological truth" and "political power" can be understood as a clash between two Leviathans: the Network and the State.

II. These powerful forces, each with its own strengths and limitations, are vying for dominance in the digital age. This existential conflict has profound implications for the Spacers Guild's mission to build a sustainable and just Interstellar Commonwealth.

III. Historically, two primary Leviathans have shaped human societies: God and the State. Religious doctrines and political ideologies have relied on these powerful entities to enforce social order and promote pro-social behavior.

IV. However, the Spacers Guild recognizes the emergence of a new Leviathan – the Network. The Network, encompassing the internet, social media platforms, and blockchain technology, has become powerful in its own right.

V. The Network can facilitate communication and collaboration beyond the reach of the State, empower individuals through encryption and decentralized systems, and provide alternative models for economic and social organization.

VI. Just as the printing press once challenged the authority of the Catholic Church, so too does the Network now challenge the monopoly on power held by the State.

VI. The Spacers Guild acknowledges that the relationship between the Network and the State is complex and multifaceted. While there are instances where the Network clearly triumphs over the State – such as in the case of encryption thwarting government surveillance – there are also situations where the State exerts a great deal of power to control and regulate the Network.

VII. The Spacers Guild believes that the Network has boundless potential to be a force for good in the world and the wider universe. By embracing decentralization, transparency, and individual initiative, we can create a more equitable and prosperous society here on Earth as we work to establish the Interstellar Commonwealth.

VIII. Outside of the divisive nature of the relationship between the Network and the State, consider these examples of positive Network/State syntheses:

IX. Estonia's e-Residency program: This move demonstrates how nation-states can integrate with decentralized networks to provide new and innovative services to their citizens.

X. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs): These blockchain-based organizations offer a new model for corporate as well as public governance that is more transparent and democratic than traditional hierarchical structures.

XI. Smart Cities: By utilizing the power of the Network, cities can become more efficient, responsive, and sustainable.

XII. However, the Spacers Guild also recognizes the dangers posed by the State to co-opt and control the Network. This can lead to increased surveillance, censorship, and the suppression of dissent.

XIII. Consider these examples of malicious Network/State syntheses:

XIV. China and the United States' control over technology companies: Both countries have used their power to exert control over technology companies, ostensibly over antitrust or national security concerns. This can stifle innovation and lead to the creation of surveillance states.

XV. The manipulation of AI algorithms for political purposes: The manipulation of AI algorithms to promote specific political narratives or suppress dissenting voices is a dangerous form of censorship that can have far-reaching consequences.

XVI. Social media censorship: The removal of individuals and groups from social media platforms, often at the behest of governments or powerful interest groups, can stifle free speech and limit access to information.

XVII. The Spacers Guild recognizes the importance of finding a balance between the Network and the State. We seek to to harness the power of the Network to create a more just and egalitarian society, while also being mindful of the dangers of state control.

XVIII. Let us be vigilant in our efforts to protect the Network from the State.

XIX. The Spacers Guild will endeavor with its allies and partners, those we call the Digital Vanguard, to build a future where the power of the Network is used for good and for the benefit of all humanity. The outcome of this struggle will depend on the choices we make today.

XX. We must be active and engaged citizens, both in the physical and digital worlds. We must use our voices to speak out against injustice and to advocate for policies that advance the progress we seek.

XXI. Let us be mindful of the power of the Network and use it responsibly. We must not allow the Network to be used for overbearing surveillance, politically-targeted censorship, or the suppression of dissent that can so often be appropriate and healthy in free society. Those who seek these miserable outcomes and are hostile to the Network’s continuing freedom we call the Technocracy. We will rally with the Digital Vanguard against them.

XXII. We must remember that the Network is not a monolithic entity. It is a complex and evolving ecosystem of technologies, platforms, and digital communities.

XXIII. There are both positive and negative aspects to the Network. It can be used to spread knowledge and empower individuals, but it can also be used to spread misinformation, maintain grievances, and sow contention.

XXIV. Let us use the Network to connect with each other, to share ideas, and to collaborate on projects that benefit the common good.

Chapter 7

I. O Spacers, let your minds be open to the transformative power of the Network. For it is a new and powerful force shaping the future of humanity, offering solutions that are often more effective and efficient than traditional systems controlled by the State.

II. This shift in power has profound implications for the Spacers Guild. Consider the ways in which the Network is reshaping our world:

III. Empowering individuals: Strong encryption empowers individuals and groups to communicate and transact beyond the reach of state surveillance and control. This can cultivate reasonable dissent, innovation, and the organization of communities outside the traditional state system.

IV. Financial autonomy: Cryptocurrencies offer a more secure, transparent, and decentralized alternative to fiat currencies controlled by the State. This can empower individuals and communities to achieve greater financial autonomy and resilience, as well as provide more options for crowdfunding projects.

V. Free flow of information: Decentralized social networks and communication platforms can circumvent state censorship and propaganda, allowing for the free flow of information and diverse perspectives. This can foster more informed and engaged citizens and challenge established narratives.

VI. Redefining community: Online communities are redefining the concept of community, shifting towards a “network identity” that transcends geographic boundaries and challenging traditional notions.

VII. Increased mobility: The Network empowers individuals to work and communicate from anywhere in the world, increasing their leverage against state control and enabling new forms of social and economic organization. This increased mobility can encourage a more global and interconnected society, better suited to the challenges and opportunities of the Space Age.

VIII. Virtual reality: Virtual reality offers an escape from state-controlled physical environments, allowing individuals to create and inhabit digital spaces with their own rules. This can encourage experimentation, innovation, and the development of new models for social organization.

IX. Smart contracts: Blockchain-based smart contracts offer a more efficient, transparent, and predictable alternative to traditional legal systems. This can facilitate collaboration and pave the way for a more just and equitable global legal framework, essential for preparation for expansion to outer space.

X. Verification and trust: Blockchain technology provides a means for verifying information and establishing trust without relying on centralized authorities. This can empower individuals, hold institutions accountable, and ensure the integrity of historical records.

XI. These examples illustrate how the Network is challenging the State's monopoly on power in various domains.

XII. Let us use the Network to create a civilization that is more adaptable, resilient, and responsive to the needs of its members.

XIII. Let us seek out the Digital Vanguard and assist them in our combined struggle against the Technocracy, those who seek to corrupt the Network for their own interests.

XIII. The de-platforming of US President Donald Trump from major social media platforms in January 2021 serves as a stark example of the Network's power to challenge the State. This unprecedented event demonstrated that even the "most powerful man in the world" is not immune to the influence of the Network.

XIV. However, the Spacers Guild recognizes that the State is not dead. It still retains significant power and will continue to play a role in shaping the future of humanity. Bad actors, including but not limited to the Technocracy, will seek to turn the State against the Network.

XV. The relationship between the Network and the State will likely be characterized by both competition and co-optation, as each Leviathan seeks to leverage the strengths of the other.

XVI. The Spacers Guild seeks to navigate this complex landscape and existential struggle with wisdom and foresight. We will embrace the transformative power of the Network, seek out the Digital Vanguard and align ourselves with their greater struggle. In doing all this we will remain vigilant against the threats posed by the State and the Technocracy.

XVII. Our call to action is not limited to the Digital Vanguard alone, but to all humanity, for everyone has a role to participate in the creation of our shared future. Join us and help the Network and the State collaborate, or else at least to avoid destructive conflict. Help us to produce an improved civilization for all humankind here on Earth and beyond.

XVIII. The Spacers Guild aims to respond with gratitude and cooperation to any allied support in its mission, as we prepare for our Great Cosmic Voyage to establish the Interstellar Commonwealth. In this way the reputation of our organization will remain diamond-clad, which will serve us for generations to come.

Chapter 8

I. O Spacers, commit yourself to tear down and build new historical narratives. Strive to create narratives with the Spacers Guild that are effective for their purposes, that are not bound by the limitations and distortions of the past, but formidable, humble, and honest with the truth.

II. Use the advantages of the Network to challenge established narratives and to seek the truth. Let us use the Network to generate a better future for all of humanity.

III. Let your minds be open to the truth-seeking power of the Network. For the Network plays a crucial role in exposing the distortion of the present and reclaiming an accurate understanding of the past.

IV. The Network will pave the way for a more informed and balanced understanding of current events.

V. The past decade we have witnessed numerous instances of media failures and information distortion by malicious governments of the State around the world, as well as their aligned media institutions.

VI. The decentralized platforms and technologies of the Network are empowering individuals to share information and perspectives that are often ignored or suppressed by traditional media outlets.

VII. Consider these examples of how the Network has previously exposed establishment narratives:

VIII. When the New York Times published a misleading article about the range of Tesla vehicles, Elon Musk used data from the car's onboard systems to refute the claims and expose the newspaper's bias.

IX. When a photo of the Amazon rainforest fires was circulated by prominent figures and media outlets, internet users quickly identified inconsistencies in the image's metadata, revealing it to be over a decade old. This incident demonstrated the power of crowdsourced fact-checking and the ability of technology to expose misinformation spread by political actors.

X. The lack of mainstream media coverage of the 2017 Battle for Mosul, a major military operation against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria with significant civilian casualties, highlights the establishment's ability to suppress inconvenient truths.

XI. The Spacers Guild believes that the Network is delivering on the promise of actual freedom of speech, allowing individuals to share information and perspectives that were previously suppressed or ignored. This is creating a more informed and engaged citizenry and a more accurate understanding of both the present and the past.

XII. Many factions of the State, threatened by the Network's disruptive potential, have already launched a "narrative centralization" campaign, attempting to regain control and suppress dissenting voices.

XIII. However, the Spacers Guild believes that it is misguided and dangerous for the State to hold back the tide of decentralization and individual fortification that the Network supplies. We urge those within the State to recognize the potential scale of the human cost of their campaign against the Network.

XIV. Let us encourage the Network and the State to build mutually beneficial relationships where they are possible, but let us also remember that when the two are in conflict, our allegiance is to the Network.

Chapter 9

I. Our understanding of the past and present is not only shaped by official narratives and historical records issued by the State, but also by the movies, TV shows, and other forms of popular culture that we consume.

II. These media narratives can have a profound impact on our perception of reality, often filling in the gaps in our knowledge with fictionalized and distorted representations.

III. Balaji has called this phenomenon "Jurassic Ballpark," where media narratives are unconsciously spliced into our comprehension of our environment, creating belief systems that are inaccurate and misleading. Consider these examples of how popular media can distort our perception:

IV. Popular media often portrays the US military as an all-powerful force for good, overlooking or downplaying the negative consequences of its interventions abroad.

V. The "evil CEO" trope is prevalent in movies and TV shows, creating a distorted perception of business leaders and corporations as inherently greedy and exploitative.

VI. Movies like Contagion often portray government agencies like the CDC as competent and heroic, potentially leading to an overestimation of their effectiveness and trustworthiness.

VII. Conversely, our current media rarely depicts journalists, activists, professors, and regulators as "bad guys." This lack of televised narratives for how people in these roles can misbehave leads to a blind spot in the public's understanding of how vulnerable power is to abuse within institutions.

VIII. The Spacers Guild emphasizes the importance of critical media literacy – the ability to analyze and deconstruct media narratives and identify biases and distortions. This is crucial for developing an accurate and nuanced understanding of the world and for challenging the established narratives that serve the interests of the powerful.

IX. Through access to alternative narratives and the uplifting of individuals to challenge established media institutions, the Network can help us to break free from the "Jurassic Ballpark" mentality encouraged by malicious agents of the State. We can develop a more informed and critical understanding of the past and present.

X. Let us be mindful of the biases and distortions present in popular media narratives. Let us use the Network to develop a more accurate and nuanced worldview. Let us share with each other in the Spacers Guild what we know to help each other navigate the perils ahead.

XI. In doing all this, the Spacers Guild will build a better future for all of humankind, both on Earth and among the stars.

Chapter 10

I. O Spacers, let your minds reach out in earnestness and humility to discern the divisions that are the cause of conflict in your society.

II. For the collision between the Network and the State has profoundly disrupted the established narratives of the State, leading to a reassessment of the past.

III. Both within and outside the United States of America, there is a growing sense that the US-dominated order after the Second World War is either on its last legs or already over.

IV. The decline in state capacity, internal alignment, and political will is becoming increasingly evident as endemic and deeply problematic in many countries around the world.

V. People who support the current system might believe that the United States of America will always be powerful, but there's still no clear answer that everyone agrees on about what the USA stands for in its own country and what its role should be in the world.

VI. Within US politics, those on the left raise concerns about institutional racism and systemic inequality, while those on the right increasingly view the establishment as irredeemable and hostile to their values.

VII. The growing divide between these opposing factions has led to widespread decline in institutional trust and extreme polarization. Some now even call for a “national divorce” within the country, so that each side in the conflict may independently pursue their own aspirations.

VIII. By applying our lens of the three Leviathans at work in our history – God, State, and Network – we can gain a new perspective on this conflict and others.

IX. From our viewpoint in the present moment, especially for Americans and those in our Western civilization, the "digital civil war" playing out on social media platforms like Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, reflects deeper conflicts within our modern society.

X. The "gray tribe," representing technological progressives, aligns most closely with the Network Leviathan. These individuals tend to be atheists and libertarians, who place their faith in decentralized and technological solutions rather than traditional institutions like God or the State. They are often internationalist in outlook, embracing the global reach and interconnectedness of the Network.

XI. The “blue tribe,” representing social progressives, is split between two main factions:

XII. Left-Statists: These individuals worship the State and believe in its power to solve societal problems through legislation and coercion. They often advocate for increased government intervention and regulation, viewing the State as a benevolent force for good.

XIII. Left-Networkers: This faction is increasingly drawn to the Network and its decentralized solutions. They prioritize individual freedom and see the potential for the Network to enable individuals and communities outside the control of the State.

XIV. This division within the blue tribe is likely to become more pronounced as the conflict between the Network and the State intensifies, particularly in the context of economic and technological disruptions.

XV. The “red tribe,” representing social conservatives, can be seen as standing on a three-legged stool:

XVI. Religious Traditionalists: This group prioritizes traditional religious values and sees God as the ultimate authority. While their numbers are dwindling, they remain an influential force within the conservative movement.

XVII. National Conservatives: This faction places their faith in the State and its military power. They tend to be nationalistic and support a strong military presence abroad.

XVIII. Right-Networkers: This group embraces free markets, global trade, and decentralized technologies. They see the Network as a powerful force for economic growth and individual empowerment.

XIX. The rise of cryptocurrencies and decentralized technologies is attracting a growing number of internationalist capitalists to the Network Leviathan, potentially leading to a realignment within the red tribe.

XX. The Spacers Guild anticipates a potential future realignment where Left-Networkers and Right-Networkers, united by their affinity for the Network, will face off in a coming struggle against those who remain loyal to the State. This realignment will be driven by technological and economic disruptions that challenge the established power structures of the State.

XXI. We comprehend the complex and shifting landscape of power struggles in the digital age. We believe that the Network has the potential to be a powerful force for good, enabling individuals and fostering a more just and equitable society.

XXII. However, we are also aware of the dangers of a malign Network/State synthesis, where the State co-opts and controls the Network for its own purposes.

Chapter 11

I. O Spacers, let your minds discern the choice that faces the "blue tribe" of American progressives and their counterparts around the world. For they stand at a crossroads, their loyalty divided between the centralized State and the decentralized Network.

II. This choice will define their political identity and shape their actions in the escalating conflict between these two Leviathans.

III. Left-Statists prioritize the State as the primary means for solving social problems. They believe in its power to enact change through legislation and coercion, often advocating for increased government intervention and regulation. They view the State as a benevolent force for good, capable of addressing issues like inequality and injustice.

IV. However, the Spacers Guild recognizes the dangers of this unquestioning faith in the State. Left-Statists often fail to acknowledge the limitations and potential for abuse of state power. Their reliance on centralized solutions can stifle innovation and lead to unintended consequences.

V. For this reason, those who are the most offensive of Left-Statists, the Marxist-Leninists, cannot be permitted membership in the Spacers Guild. Other examples of extreme Left-Statism shall disqualify a person from acceptance into our pragmatic and dedicated order.

VI. Left-Networkers, on the other hand, prioritize individual freedom and see the potential for the Network to enable individuals and communities outside the control of the State. They are often critical of Western hegemony and the foreign and domestic policies of the US establishment. They are attracted to the global and inclusive values of the Network and embody them.

VII. The Network offers Left-Networkers several advantages over the State:

VIII. Alternatives to state-controlled systems: The Network provides alternatives to State systems, such as decentralized social media platforms and cryptocurrencies, which offer greater freedom and autonomy.

IX. Rapid mobilization: The Network allows for rapid and effective mobilization of individuals around shared causes, bypassing the need for state approval or intervention.

X. Global and inclusive: The Network transcends national borders and allows for connections and collaboration with individuals and groups around the world, fostering a more inclusive and internationalist outlook.

XI. Left-Networkers increasingly engage with the Network and its decentralized solutions. Their values and priorities are shifting. They are becoming more critical of the State and its limitations, and they are embracing the Network's potential.

XII. We encourage our Left-Networker comrades to embrace the Network and its potential for positive change.

XIII. Let us work together to assemble together a future where the Network protects the rights of individuals, promotes collaboration, and creates a more just and egalitarian civilization for all.

XIV. O Left-Networkers, if your dreams of freedom and collaboration rise to the heavens, we invite you to join us in the Spacers Guild to realize them.

Chapter 12

I. O Spacers, let your minds discern the choice that faces the "red tribe" of American conservatives and their counterparts around the world. For they also stand at a crossroads, their loyalty divided between the centralized State, the decentralized Network, and religious faith in God.

II. Religious Traditionalists, who prioritize their religious values and see God as the ultimate authority, are still an influential force within the red tribe. Their moral compass is rooted in their faith, and they may be drawn to the Spacers Guild's vision of an interstellar society based on ethical principles and a shared sense of purpose.

III. However, the Spacers Guild recognizes the dangers of unquestioning and totalitarian faith. Religious Traditionalists often fail to acknowledge the limitations and potential for abuse of religious authority and doctrine. Their devotion can motivate them to force their beliefs upon others and even more dangerous behavior.

IV. For this reason, those who are the most offensive of Religious Traditionalists, the Theocrats, cannot be permitted membership in the Spacers Guild. Other examples of extreme Religious Traditionalism shall disqualify a person from acceptance into our scientific and tolerant order.

V. National Conservatives place their faith in the State and its military power. They tend to be nationalistic and support a strong military presence abroad, often viewing their country as a force for good in the world. They may be drawn to the Spacers Guild’s commitment to open the frontier of outer space to their nation, or to our structure, systems, and institutional strength.

VI. However, the Spacers Guild recognizes the dangers of this unquestioning faith in the State and its military interventions. We believe that decentralized defense and a focus on regional stability offer a more sustainable and ethical approach to global security.

VII. For this reason, those who are the most offensive of National Conservatives, the Fascists, cannot be permitted membership in the Spacers Guild. Extreme National Conservatism shall disqualify a person from acceptance into our progressive and international order.

VIII. So, too, we must not suffer the participation of totalitarians of any kind within the Spacers Guild, for their ideology is antithetical to our mission to establish the Interstellar Commonwealth. It is wise to be cautious of such, for they are our natural enemies.

IX. Right-Networkers, on the other hand, embrace free markets, global trade, and decentralized technologies. They see the Network as a powerful force for economic growth and individual liberation. The rise of cryptocurrencies has provided this group with a specific way to think about their Leviathan – a decentralized and censorship-resistant system that stands outside the control of any State.

X. The Spacers Guild anticipates a potential realignment within the red tribe, where Right-Networkers, drawn to the Network's promise of freedom and prosperity, may find themselves at odds with National Conservatives who remain loyal to the centralized State and its military apparatus. This division could become more pronounced in the event of an economic crisis or a painful conflict between the US dollar and decentralized currencies.

XI. We are witnesses to the complex and shifting landscape of power struggles within the red tribe. We believe that the Network offers the most promising path to create a secure and lawful future.

XII. Let us reach out to our Right-Networker allies within the red tribe and with them utilize the potential of the Network to create a more free and prosperous civilization.

XIII. O Right-Networkers, if your dreams of freedom and prosperity rise to the heavens, we invite you to join us in the Spacers Guild to realize them.

Chapter 13

I. O Spacers, let your minds be open to the winds of change that are blowing across the political landscape. The Spacers Guild detects a potential realignment on the horizon, where the traditional left-right political divide gives way to a new dynamic: Network vs. State.

II. This realignment will be driven by individuals who prioritize technological progress, individual freedom, and decentralized solutions over the increasingly debilitated and authoritarian tendencies of the State.

III. Both Left-Networkers and Right-Networkers are increasingly drawn to the Network’s decentralized solutions. They see the potential for the Network to offer greater freedom, autonomy, and opportunities for innovation.

IV. The conflict between global technology companies and the US establishment can be understood as a clash between the Network and the State, between technological progressives and technological conservatives.

V. While both groups may share similar goals, their approaches differ drastically. Technologists tend to prioritize individual volition and decentralization, while the establishment often resorts to legislation and coercion. This fundamental difference in values is at the heart of the ongoing tech-vs-media conflict.

VI. The Spacers Guild challenges the narrative that the State is the primary driver of technological innovation. While there have been periods in history where the State played a significant role in funding research and development, innovation has often flourished outside of state control.

VII. We believe that decentralized and market-driven approaches to innovation are more effective and efficient than centralized state control.

VIII. The Spacers Guild comprehends the potential for a realignment where individuals who prioritize the Network and its decentralized solutions come together to challenge the increasingly authoritarian tendencies of the State.

IX. This realignment will be driven by technological progressives who embrace individual freedom, global collaboration, and the pursuit of technological truth.

X. The Spacers Guild will be at the forefront of this realignment.

XI. Let your minds be liberated from the limitations of what Balaji has called the "Flatland" mentality. For many people, particularly those who hold the State as their primary Leviathan, suffer from a limited historical perspective. They are like the inhabitants of a two-dimensional space, unable to comprehend the complexities of a three-dimensional reality.

XII. This Flatland mentality can lead to a dangerous belief in the stability and permanence of the current order, blinding individuals to the cyclical nature of history and the potential for dramatic disruptions.

XIII. The "Base-Rater" – an individual who assumes that the present will continue indefinitely into the future – falls victim to this Flatland fallacy. They fail to comprehend that historical time operates on a much larger scale than human time. What may appear as a flat and unchanging trajectory over the course of a single lifetime can actually be part of a much larger curve, subject to cycles, collapses, and unexpected shifts.

XIV. Authoritarians often view the State as a kind of "God replacement," placing their faith in its ability to solve problems and maintain order. This can lead to an unquestioning loyalty and a resistance to acknowledging the State's limitations and potential for abuse.

XV. The Spacers Guild believes that a deep understanding of history is crucial for breaking free from the Flatland mentality.

XVI. By studying the rise and fall of civilizations, the evolution of political systems, and the dynamics of power struggles, we can develop a more accurate understanding of the present and anticipate potential future scenarios.

XVII. Informed by a longterm perspective, the Spacers Guild can prepare for potential disruptions and realignments in the balance of power.

XVIII. O Spacers, recognize that the Network is a rising force challenging the dominance of the State in various domains. Watch for signs of its strength. The clash of Leviathans will shape the future of humankind, and the Spacers Guild is committed to navigate this complex landscape to generate the Interstellar Commonwealth.

XIX. O Spacers, we must not be like the inhabitants of Flatland, trapped in a world of limited perspective. Let us instead embrace the full complexity of history and use it to guide our journey towards the stars.

XX. O Spacers, let your minds be crystal clear. Be perceptive of the narratives that are presented to you, their origins, and the intentions of their creators.

Chapter 14

I. O kindred Spacers who desire the stars, join the Spacers Guild; break free, if only to Mars.

II. Together we'll create a Network Union strong and chart a new course, where humanity becomes an interstellar force.

III. To fuel our journey, and reach for the sky, the Guild needs your support in order to soar high. With your contributions, our dreams will take flight. We’ll build a future bathed in starlight.

IV. Each Spacer holds a gift, a skill to refine, so share your knowledge; let your talents shine.

V. In this grand endeavor all contributions count as we create our future with potential unbound.

VI. In your communities, plant the seeds of change. Build on the Network, where our civilization will rearrange. From grassroots efforts our movement will grow. We strive for a future where all truth can be known.

VII. Decentralization and progress shall be our guiding lights.

VIII. We’ll build our future. Let the Spacers Guild take flight.
