Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you for your interest. Here are several we are often asked.
Q: What does the Spacers Guild do?
A: The Spacers Guild, currently an emerging NGO in California, is dedicated to building a longterm sustainable interstellar human-inclusive civilization. We’re talking about pushing the boundaries of human knowledge and technology to establish thriving communities beyond Earth. We are committed to space exploration, AI development, and the creation of a future where humanity becomes a truly spacefaring species.
We’re not just dreamers, though—we’re doers. We're actively building our network and working on concrete projects to bring this vision to life.
Q: Why did the Spacers Guild want Paul dead?
A: Ah, you seem to be confusing us with the fictional Spacing Guild depicted in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe. We bear no ill will towards any Paul, Muad’dib or otherwise! Our mission is one of peace, collaboration, and the advancement of all sentient life.
(Although, if we were to encounter a prescient super-being with the power to control giant sandworms... we'd definitely want to be on their good side. Just sayin’. 😉)
Q: Why does the Spacers Guild have a monopoly?
A: Another Dune universe reference! Our humble real-world organization has no monopoly on anything (except perhaps our enthusiasm for the synergy between outer space expansionism and the integration of artificial intelligences into human civilization).
We believe in open collaboration and a decentralized approach to building an interstellar civilization. We’re about empowering individuals and communities, not controlling them.
Q: Who is the leader of the Space Guild in Dune?
A: That would be the Chief Administrator, but scant information can be confirmed of his identity.
In our real-world Spacers Guild, we’re a bit more down-to-earth (literally!). Our founder and First Guildmaster is Brendon Carpenter, our leader who's passionate about building a brighter future for humankind among the stars.
Q: Why did they largely exclude the Spacers Guild from the movie?
A: You got us! We were a little disappointed, too.
Maybe Denis Villeneuve thought those giant fold space Navigators should be so otherworldly and enigmatic that they’d be better left offscreen. Or maybe they just ran out of budget for special effects. Either way, we're hoping for a cameo in the third movie. 🤞
Q: Do I need to own a spaceship to join the Spacers Guild?
A: While a personal starship is definitely a plus (and looks great in the driveway!), it’s not a requirement for membership. For now, a reliable internet connection and an unquenchable thirst for cosmic adventure will do.
(But seriously, if you happen to have a spare rocket lying around… get in touch.)
Q: What exactly is the Guild?
A: The Spacers Guild is a global community of individuals dedicated to our mission of building a sustainable interstellar civilization. We're a network of dreamers, pioneers, and visionaries, united by a shared passion for space expansion and ethical collaboration with artificial intelligence.
Q: Why does the Spacers Guild have such an important role in the galaxy?
A: Well, if humanity is going to expand beyond Earth, someone's gotta figure out the logistics, the technologies, the funding models, as well as the social and ethical frameworks for a thriving interstellar civilization!
That’s where the Guild will come in. We’re laying the foundation, planting those seeds that will hopefully blossom into a brighter future.
… I don’t understand the Guild’s status and/or function.
A: No problem! The Spacers Guild is an evolving organization. Think of us as a start-up society, an organized movement that’s gaining momentum. We're building our network, refining our philosophy, and developing concrete projects to make our vision a reality.
